London based Daughter are a band I’ve not heard before, but from the brooding first song “Winter” I felt an instant familiarity. If you leave (4AD 2013) is a strikingly beautiful album, delicate soundscapes envelop relentlessly heart felt, love lost ballads. Daughter are girlfriend and boyfriend Elena Tonra (singing) and Igor Haefeli (playing guitar) and create the albums themselves, organically intertwining electronics with live guitars, drums and Elena’s breath-taking vocals. Her voice has a moments of Cat Power, Katie Harkin and at times Regina Spektor and at times melts into the track, becoming another instrument, it’s a difficult trick to pull off convincingly, but Daughter certainly do.
While listening for the first time I kind of wanted something big to happen somewhere along the way. Something to punch me in the chest, but it never really came. The energy is on a similar level throughout, but you could say is restrained and admirable. Although it’s true the album is subdued, almost ambient over most of it’s 10 tracks, there are welcome moments of energy like on the would be pop hit “Human”. There is actually a strong pop ethic on this record with clear consideration for crafting melodies and structure. I think the songs would pass the test of being sung by one person and an acoustic guitar, if there is such a test, and if there is a regulatory board for assessing such tests. There must be one somewhere.
I’ll be listening to this again, I can see it being my soundtrack for driving late at night on motorways, a bit of rain in the air, reflected headlights punctuating long stretches of the bleak Pennine moors.
